Inter wing-back Matteo Darmian believes that Inter will be able to reach their goals this season if they continue playing as they did against Real Madrid yesterday despite the disappointing defeat.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster ITV after the match, the 31-year-old gave his immediate reaction to the match, and chose to focus on the display on the pitch by the Nerazzurri rather than on the 1-0 loss which it finished.
Inter played with attacking intent throughout the Champions League group stage opener, especially in the first half where they created several presentable opportunities to score and looked to be firmly in control against the La Liga leaders.
In the end, it was a good finish by Real substitute Rodrygo which settled the encounter, coming after the Nerazzurri were denied on multiple occasions by Merengues goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
The result does not get the group stage off to a good start for the Nerazzurri, who have made qualification for the knockout rounds a major priority for the season, but Darmian believes that they can put it behind that if they keep playing as they did on the night.
“There’s little to say. We are talking about a defeat that came in the 90th minute after a great performance by everyone,” he said. “There is regret, from the first minute we showed our intent, we wanted to take all three points and we took to the pitch with the right attitude.”
“Unfortunately we weren’t able to break the deadlock and we conceded a goal that condemned us to a defeat,” he reflected. “I don’t think the result should take away our confidence after such a match. If we play the other five matches like this, I think we will have no problem progressing from the group.”
Darmian added that “When you play for such a prestigious club you have responsibilities. I always try to give my best for the team, to work hard during the week and to be ready.”
