Former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio believes that Inter were unfortunate to lose their Champions League group stage clash with Real Madrid and that they deserved a better result.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, the 35-year-old gave the view that the Nerazzurri’s performance was strong despite their defeat at the hands of Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Inter had hoped to get their Champions League campaign off to the right start, and the 1-0 defeat at the San Siro, thanks to a last-minute winner by Real substitute Rodrygo, will not be the result that they were looking for as they seek to progress to the knockout rounds after disappointing exits in recent seasons.

However, Marchisio believes that the match was not a major cause for alarm, as even though they were not able to take points from it in the end, they showed enough in their performance to suggest that they can get back on track.

“The result hurts them but the performance bodes well,” he gave the opinion. “Inter played very well against Real, but in Europe you need quality and a bit of luck which the Nerazzurri lacked in their first match.”
