Two of the top strikers in Serie A are likely to take the pitch tomorrow at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, with the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Dusan Vlahovic set to start on opposite ends of the pitch in Inter’s clash with Fiorentina.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the pair each could have departed in the summer having been the subject of serious transfer interest but instead will continue to light up the Italian top flight.

Martinez had been the subject of serious transfer interest throughout the summer, with clubs in Spain and Italy particularly keen on the Argentine, but in the end the Nerazzurri resisted a strong push from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and kept hold of the player.

The 24-year-old is looked at as an important part of the long-term project at the Giuseppe Meazza, and even in a summer transfer window of upheaval which saw major sales made to bring in transfer revenue he was kept hold of.

Meanwhile, Vlahovic had been a serious target for a number of clubs, with even the Nerazzurri considering him as a possible replacement for Romelu Lukaku following the Belgian’s sale to Chelsea, but in the end La Viola resisted the strong interest of Atletico Madrid in particular to make him an important part of their project.

The Gazzetta highlights the fact that in the calendar year 2021 the pair have banged in 37 goals between them, and posits that both could be worth in excess of €100 million in the near future.
