Legendary former Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero believes that Inter striker Edin Dzeko can be as prolific as the man he replaces at the Nerazzurri, Romelu Lukaku.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the Bianconeri legend gave his view that the Bosnian centre-forward has the right qualities to carry the same goalscoring burden that Lukaku did before he let for Chelsea.

Lukaku’s shock sale to Chelsea led many observers to believe that the Nerazzurri would lose some attacking strength, as the Belgian had led the team in both goals and assists after a stellar 2020-21 campaign which saw him help the team to their first Scudetto in eleven years.

However, Del Piero notes the attacking quality still in the team, both in the form of players already in the squad from last season as well as in the form of new arrivals, particularly Dzeko.

The former striker praised Nerazzurri striker Lautaro Martinez for having scored important goals for his club already this season.

Of the Argentine’s opener against Bologna over the weekend he said, “The goal unlocked the game, many times it determines victory. I’m elatively surprised by Lautaro, he has given the right response to Inter and the world of football. But will it continue? Even without Lukaku?”

Del Piero answered, “If he can keep on playing the way he has been, with this devilishness, then he will be very strong. Inzaghi’s teams score a lot of goals, and let’s not forget that Inter won the Scudetto. They brought in Dumfries, Dzeko could get as many as Lukaku as a goal for me, when you create a lot it’s like that.”

He made clear the Bosnian’s importance to Inter, stating that “Lukaku is in London, Inter must build in another way now. Dzeko is useful to Inter.”
