Former Inter and Fiorentina midfielder Borja Valero has defended the Nerazzurri amid criticism aimed at the club by Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso.

Speaking to Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica in an interview published in today’s print edition, the 36-year-old responded to Commisso’s claims that the Nerazzurri and fellow Serie A club Juventus don’t follow the same rules as other Italian clubs when it comes to finances.

Club finances and spending have become a prominent issue in Italy, with many clubs’ financial restrictions known to be exacerbated by lack of revenue during the pandemic.

Inter and Fiorentina have both had to stick to financial restrictions in recent times, with the Nerazzurri’s problems widely reported and known to have resulted in the form of two major players in the form of Achraf Hakimi and Romelu Lukaku.

“I think they are within the rules,” Valero said of the Nerazzurri. “I want to believe it otherwise it would be bad. I often talk to people inside Inter and I know that they are working hard to respect those rules. They have sold very strong players just to get back in compliance.”

The Spanish former midfielder also gave his views on Inter in the Scudetto race, suggesting that the Nerazzurri are the team best-placed to win the Scudetto.

“They’re the team that I like the most so far,” he said. “As a squad they are the most complete and, if they manage the three competitions well, they are still the team to beat.”
