Ex-Italy international Marco Tardelli had boldly claimed that Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella is the most important player in the Italian squad right now, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Legislative Assembly of Emilia-Romagna of ‘Azzurra, as reported by FcINternews, Marco Tardelli explained how highly he rates Inter’s young midfielder.

“In my opinion, he is the strongest player at the moment, the most important of the national team.”

Marco Tardelli then mentioned a few other players that he thinks will be the future of the Italian national team, including ex-Inter attacker Nicolo Zaniolo.

“Then Zaniolo, Pellegrini and Raspadori will grow up, when the time comes. I think there are enough. I love my national team, historically, but I also love all the others, because the national team is just to be appreciated. Even that of the ’70s excited me a lot.”

Nicolo Barella had an excellent year in 2020/21 as Antonio Conte guided Inter to a first Scudetto since 2009/10. He then played extremely well in the midfield of the national team as Italy marched to the final of Euro 2020.

Once there, Roberto Mancini’s side beat England on penalties at Wembley to win the tournament. Nicolo Barella was a key player throughout the tournament and is expected to be offered a new Inter contract soon.
