Inter could have to hand a significant salary increase to midfielder Nicolo Barella should they wish to agree on a contract extension with him.

This according to SportItalia transfer market expert Alfredo Pedulla, who writes for Gazzetta.it that a significant raise could be needed to iron out a new deal with the 24-year-old.

Even though the summer transfer market is long over, the Nerazzurri are still focused on dealing with the contract situations of key players already in the squad.

A full agreement with Lautaro Martinez looks to be close at hand with the Argentine striker’s situation having been unlocked through negotiations, while the club have yet to agree on a renewal with midfielder Marcelo Brozovic whose deal runs out at the end of June 2022 as it stands.

Barella is an important player at the Giuseppe Meazza, regarded as one of the prime candidates for the captain’s armband in the future, and the club are determined to secure his future amid interest from a number of Europe’s top clubs.

An agreement could be sought, but given the value that the midfielder has demonstrated in his time with the club and playing for the Italian national team, a significant raise could be required to convince him to commit his future.
