Hakan Calhanoglu is still the favourite to keep his place in midfield for Inter’s Champions League group stage clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, but he is expected to prove his quality in the match.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who report that the 27-year-old’s recent performances have not impressed Simone Inzaghi and that the manager wants to see better from him.

Calhanoglu had a strong start to life at Inter, scoring in his debut for the club against Genoa, but his performances have tailed off as the season has gone on.

Meanwhile, Matias Vecino has been in good form, starting against Bologna and then impressing from off the bench in the Nerazzurri’s last two matches against Fiorentina and Atalanta.

Calhanoglu could still keep his place in the lineup ahead of Vecino, but Inzaghi is hoping that the Turk will repay his trust with a better display than has been seen from him in recent matches.
