Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Ivano Bordon believes that the criticisms of current Number One Samir Handanovic are too harsh.

Speaking to Italian news outlet ItaSportPress.it, the Nerazzurri legend defended the current shot-stopper and suggested that the most important thing is that he continue to receive support and that he will find his best, saying the same thing as well about Federico Dimarco following his penalty miss against Atalanta.

Handanovic has received criticism for his form this season, with a number of high-profile mistakes causing problems for his team and leading to some feeling that he is no longer at his best.

However, Bordon has faith in the Slovenian and believes that he can show the qualities which have made him the first-choice keeper since his arrival from Udinese in 2012 once again.

“Handanovic is also a good penalty stopper, and perhaps at the moment he is receiving too many criticisms,” Bordon said. “He must be supported and given morale, and will come back stronger than before. We must leave him to work in peace, Samir is a very good goalkeeper and at the end of the season his saves will be worth important points for Inter.”

He also stated that he feels that Dimarco can return from his failed spot kick against Atalanta on Saturday, and that the most important thing for him is not to lose his confidence and to have the right mindset to return and take more.

“I tell Federico to go back to the spot because penalties can be missed,” Bordon reflected. “I have saved several since we goalkeepers have an advantage in this circumstance compared to those who take them.”

“If he has decided to take it it means that he is not too excited,” he went on, “and even Beccalossi after the two mistakes against Slovan Bratislava returned to the spot – he feared that he had ruined the relationship with the fans, but when he returned to San Siro the supporters welcomed him with an ovation. The same roar of passion he received and that Dimarco will surely continue to receive.”
