Paolo Di Canio has said that Inter are still the favourites to win the Serie A title this season despite how tight the top of the table is, according to a report in the Italian media.

Whilst speaking to Il Giornale, Paolo Di Canio explained that Inter play a more attacking style of play now under Simone Inzaghi and that they have maintained the hunger that they had under Antonio Conte.

“In my opinion, Inter remains the strongest as long as they maintain at least 70% of the determination, anger and unity of purpose they had with Antonio Conte. Now they play a different football, more offensive and I like it because he risks more but has yet to find the right place.”

Paolo Di Canio also revealed that he thinks Edin Dzeko is bringing more to the team than Romelu Lukaku was because of Inter’s high scoring rate in the league so far.

“Edin Dzeko has more qualities than Romelu Lukaku in certain things and you can see the results. Inter have not scored 20 goals in six games since the 60-61 season.

“Inter have lost nothing and it seems obvious to me because they have already scored 20 goals in six league games. If Italian football cries for Lukaku’s farewell, I feel like crying. He is not one of those players who light up your eyes with great plays, he is functional for some teams but if last year at Inter there was Duvan Zapata and not Lukaku, Inter would have won the Scudetto anyway, perhaps with a few less goals.

“He lacks 7-8 qualities to become a great player, he has little football intelligence, little intuition. Dzeko makes the team play better is very different he does things that Romelu did not do.

“It is said that the teams rely on the great players while they said that Inter relied on Lukaku: this is my summary of him, a great player but not a champion. Lukaku is not missing from Inter at all.”

Paolo Di Canio also suggested that Inter played well against Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Madrid and that they could very feasibly have ended up with more points than the one they currently have in the Champions League.

“I have heard a lot of criticism but when you play against Shakhtar Donetsk you know they will tend to dribble much more than you.

“Inter Milan built neat, clear scoring chances, they could win the game with little risk. True, the game wasn’t sparkling this time but that doesn’t mean anything, the Nerazzurri miss the point against Real Madrid and would now be second behind the surprising Sheriff.”

Finally Paolo Di Canio suggested that the Champions League is showing that Serie A is not as strong as many people like to think.

“We believe that our championship is one of the strongest in the world but then when we return to Europe we realize that it has not been like this for 15 years.

“In the Champions League it’s different, Inter, for example, missed several chances against Shakhtar, if you make a mistake in the league it’s different, you have time to recover, in the Champions League you don’t.

“Then there are teams like the Sheriff who play games of life, no one gives you anything anymore. It’s not that they come from Moldova to give you the game, they want to show off, they play with blood in their eyes.”
