Inter striker Lautaro Martinez returns to the site of his first start in a Nerazzurri shirt when his team travel to the Mapei Stadium to face Sassuolo this evening.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport highlight how the Argentine’s role in the team has changed as he has faced the Neroverdi since joining in the summer of 2018, and argue that he has taken on the role of a leader in the team.

Martinez made his first start for Inter away at Sassuolo, where he was partnered with fellow Argentine Mauro Icardi who is now at Paris Saint-Germain, in a losing effort for the Nerazzurri.

Martinez had yet to really establish himself in the Nerazzurri at that time, under manager Luciano Spalletti, but by the time Antonio Conte took over next season he was being trusted more and more, and in the Argentine’s second visit to the Mapei Stadium the Nerazzurri got the better of Roberto De Zerbi’s Sassuolo team 4-3 in the first match where both Martinez and Romelu Lukaku got on the scoresheet.

Last season the trip to face Sassuolo was a vital match for Conte as he put the team in the right balance to win the Scudetto with Martinez an important player, and now the Argentine is expected to be a difference-maker under Simone Inzaghi.
