Inter were fortunate not to go down a man at the end of the first half of their Serie A clash with Sassuolo yesterday, with Samir Handanovic avoiding a straight red for a challenge on Neroverdi forward Gregoire Defrel.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri were able to complete their comeback win against Alessio Dionisi’s men partly because of the refereeing decision which saw the Slovenian remain.

The Nerazzurri completed a comeback win after going a goal down in the first half, with Simone Inzaghi’s men growing into the second half and eventually producing enough quality to overhaul the deficit.

However, according to the Corriere they were lucky to be in the situation to be able to make this turnaround in fortunes, after Handanovic stayed on the pitch following his coming-together with Defrel.

The Nerazzurri will know that, had the referee seen the incident a different way and decided to send the Slovenian off, then the comeback would have been much more difficult to produce.
