Former Torino and Lazio goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani believes that Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez must be the starting strike partnership at Inter.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the 55-year-old gave the view that the Nerazzurri’s comeback win over Sassuolo over the weekend illustrated that the team are at the best when the duo are on the pitch together and that they must be the first-choice options leading the line.

Inter have made a number of attacking options available to coach Simone Inzaghi, with the likes of Joaquin Correa arriving from Lazio to reunite with his former club and Alexis Sanchez also now fit after a lengthy absence through a calf injury.

However, in spite of the impact that these two players can make, the Nerazzurri’s incisive look when Dzeko entered the pitch against Sassuolo suggested that he can both score goals regularly and get the best out of Martinez if he and the Argentine start together.

“Inter changed the team and after thirty seconds changed the game,” Marchegiani reflected. “It is difficult to say if it was the substitutions or that goal. Sassuolo no longer had the strength to fight back. Dzeko and Lautaro are the starting duo.”

He also speculated as to why Inter captain Samir Handanovic was not shown a straight red for an incident with Sassuolo striker Gregoire Defrel at the end of the first half, wondering “Could it be that they interpreted it as a non-red car foul and therefore the VAR cannot intervene?”
