Legendary former AC Milan and Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi believes that Inter have the right formula to succeed in Serie A, but that they still face problems in the Champions League.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, the former coach gave the view that the Nerazzurri can sit near the top of Serie A thanks to the quality of their individual players but must find different solutions in Europe’s top competition.

Last season Inter crashed out of the Champions League group stage finishing last in their group while winning the Scudetto in emphatic fashion, and this season has followed a worryingly similar trend.

The Nerazzurri sit third in the league table on the basis of an undefeated start, while in the Champions League they have managed to collect only one point from two matches, leaving them closer to the possibility of elimination than they would like to be.

Sacchi explained, “In Italy the Inter formula works, in Europe a little less so. In Italy it is based on individuals and on the defensive phase. Since Inter has the best individual players and is well set up, with many men, to protect their own area, it is logical that they have an excellent chance in the league. But against Sassuolo, who spend less money, they sweated a lot.”
