Ex-Inter and Italy defender Marco Materazzi has expressed the trust he has in Inter coach Simone Inzaghi after a good start to the season, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking to FcINternews during a recent club corporate event, Marco Materazzi explained that he has faith in Simone Inzaghi because of his good work with Lazio over the past five years that he was in charge of the Biancocelesti.

“There are 7-8 teams that are strong and can steal points from each other. They are all doing well, they are all there and anything can happen. I hope Inter will win.

“I have faith in Inzaghi because what he has done in recent years with Lazio is very good, he came out of his comfort zone to become great at Inter too.”

As for Inter’s start to the season, Marco Materazzi is pleased with how things are going so far but is aware that plenty of teams are capable of winning the Scudetto this season.

“The team is doing an excellent championship, they are only a few points away from the top. The teams are all there. There is quality, there is the awareness of being strong and champions of Italy. It will be hard and difficult, but Inter is structured to fight until the end.”

Marco Materazzi was managed by Jose Mourinho when he was at Inter so he now finds it very odd to see the Portuguese coach in the dugout at AS Roma this season.

“It is very strange, but it is his job and his profession. He will certainly have evaluated well what are the pros and cons. He is doing a great job, but I want him to finish behind Inter.”

It was put to Marco Materazzi that Alessandro Bastoni is his type of player, and he showed how impressed he has been by the defender, saying: “I hope I have been as good as he is, he is doing very well, he has had an exponential growth.”

Finally, when discussing Inter’s Champions League campaign he played down the panic around the competition.

“They mustn’t get caught up in his frenzy, Sheriff is enthusiastic but objectively he suffered a lot in Madrid. With a nice full San Siro we can have our say.”
