Former Aruba national team coach Giovanni Franken believes that Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries has great potential and can become a top player with the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, the Dutch coach spoke about the 25-year-old’s early formative experiences and praised both his mindset and talent, noting that Dumfries initially played as a central defender before he moved him to the right side.

Inter signed Dumfries from PSV this summer, with the Dutchman having grown in reputation through several years at the Dutch club as well as with the Dutch national team.

Dumfries came in with big shoes to fill, being seen as the replacement for Achraf Hakimi on the right following the Moroccan’s departure for Paris Saint-Germain, but Franken believes that he has the ability to make it happen.

For him, the Dutchman has the determination to make the best of his talent, and can improve to be one of the best in the world at Inter.

Franken’s first memories of working with Dumfries were “His mentality and determination,” and “That he was lined up in the wrong position. He played as a central defender but I moved him to the right wing.”

He stated that Dumfries trains “Extremely hard, but not because he needs it, rather because he wants it. There is a big difference!”

On whether the 25-year-old could become the best wing-back in the world he said, “Yes, I think so. There is a technical difference, but I think Denzel’s mentality is better.”

And on what he felt when he heard that his former player Dumfries had signed for Inter he stated, “I felt happy, and that he had achieved a well-deserved goal.”
