Former Fiorentina, Genoa, and Torino goalkeeper Silvano Martina believes that Inter captain Samir Handanovic is still a good keeper and is not in a crisis despite a few recent errors.

Speaking to Rome-based newspaper Il Messaggero in an interview published in today’s print edition, the former keeper gave the view that the Slovenian’s issue is that he has been playing too often for the Nerazurri and has been worn out.

Handanovic has come in for criticism after high-profile errors against the likes of Verona and Atalanta as well as for some uncertainty about his ability with the ball at his feet in the system of coach Simone Inzaghi.

However, the 37-year-old has also produced some impressive displays including vital saves to bail his team out of trouble, and Martina believes that he still has the quality needed to be the regular keeper at Inter.

“It is wrong to talk about a crisis with Handanovic,” he stated. “He’s always reactive. The mistake, if you like, is that of wanting to play every game. In the long run, 50-60 games a year will leave you empty.”

Martina also spoke about reported Inter target Andre Onana, stating that “Honestly, he didn’t particularly impress me with Ajax but if they want him it means they know him better than me.”
