Former Schalke, Hamburg, and PSV coach Huub Stevens believes that Ajax should bring Inter-linked goalkeeper Andre Onana back into their lineup once he is available to play.

Speaking to Dutch football program Goedmorgen Oranje, as reported by FCInterNews, the Dutch coach gave the view that since Onana remains in Ajax’s strongest team he should be in the starting eleven.

Onana has been serving a one-year doping ban, but he will be allowed to return early next month, having already been allowed to return to training with the squad.

The Cameroonian looks set to leave the club next summer with his contract expiring at the end of June 2022 and no agreement on a renewal looking to be on the way, and Inter are one of the most likely destinations for him.

The Dutch champions are already looking to move on from Onana, but Stevens believes that as long as he is at the club, they should rely on him given his quality.

“As a coach I would let Onana play,” he stated. “A coach always wants to have the best team on the pitch. The club obviously has their reasons for not using him, but as a coach, Erik ten Hag will always want to play with his strongest team.”

As to whether Onana will be able to quickly return from his lengthy absence he said, “I think it’s easier for a goalkeeper than for an outfield player to get into the rhythm right away. It’s really different for an outfield player.”
