Former Vitesse midfielder Bart Latuheru believes that Inter defender Stefan de Vrij is one of the top players in his position in European football.

Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf in an interview published in today’s print edition, the 55-year-old praised the Nerazzurri defender and suggested that he is one of the Netherlands’ best options in defense ahead of Juventus man Matthijs de Ligt.

De Vrij has been a strong defensive presence for the Nerazzurri since joining from Lazio in the summer of 2018, building on the reputation he had established with the Biancocelesti and with Feyenoord and becoming a key player in last season’s Scudetto triumph.

The 29-year-old has also become a key man in defense for the Dutch national team, having been one of their best players at the Euros, their first international tournament since his breakout displays at the 2014 World Cup.

Latuheru believes that even with the Dutch team’s wealth of defensive options, de Vrij is a player who must be considered essential.

“He is undoubtedly one of the best central defenders in Europe,” he stated of de Vrij. “Together with Virgil van Dijk and also Matthijs de Ligt, we are lucky to have top level defenders. There is nothing wrong with Matthijs, but you can’t take Stefan off the pitch now.”
