Ex-Inter and Lazio goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi has revealed that he never expected Simone Inzaghi to be a coach after his playing career, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Speaking during an interview with Corriere dello Sport, Angelo Peruzzi explained that Simone Inzaghi was not the sort of player or character that was expected to go on and have a successful management career when he finished playing.

“It’s the exact opposite of the player. If they had asked me to indicate someone who could never have been a coach, I would have answered Simone straight away.

“He was a kid, he lived for the day, he laughed, he joked, it was all a joke. He became a man, now he is mature, responsible, stubborn too.

“A first-rate technician, he studies day after day, takes care of the details, and is a decision-maker.”

Angelo Peruzzi then explained that Simone Inzaghi has always had a good blend of being friends with everyone whilst also having an authoritarian streak that lets people know he is in charge.

“I never thought I’d see him attack someone in the locker room on the wall, and instead it happened. He knows how to be sweet with the players, but also authoritative.

“He lives for the result, for the victory. Believe me, he’s so tense and high he’d even be capable of fighting.”

It is also clear that Angelo Peruzzi feels people are too quick to compare Simone Inzaghi to his predecessor, Antonio Conte.

“Many, too many speak of Simone by hearsay, without knowing him. In football, many only make cinema.

“They certainly have different characters and paths, he and Conte, but Simone does not lack the temperament of the winner. This Inter has everything to repeat itself, Conte or Simone makes no difference.”

Simone Inzaghi spent five years as the first team coach of Lazio after being a player and youth coach at the club, before the move to Inter in 2021.
