Legendary former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta believes that it is correct to play on in situations such as the one from which Lazio scored their winner against Inter earlier this evening.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the Rossoneri legend gave the view that teams should never put the ball out for an injured opponent, something which he has always maintained.

Inter players were visibly angry after the Biancocelesti scored on a counterattack despite the fact that Nerazzurri defender Federico Dimarco still looked to be on the ground with an injury.

The Biancocelesti players were aware of Dimarco, but decided to keep playing rather than putting the ball out of play so that Dimarco could recover.

The Nerazzurri players complained to the referee following the controversial incident, but Costacurta believes that there was nothing wrong with Lazio continuing to play in spite of Dimarco being on the ground.

“I have been saying for 27 years that we shouldn’t stop,” he opined. “I hope it is the episode that will prevent  teams from stopping. Controversial episodes can be recognized. Only in Italy do we stop.”
