Inter’s loss against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico yesterday turned on a controversial incident where the Biancocelesti scored when the Nerazzurri players believed that they should have put the ball out of play.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, who outline the dramatic scenes around the goal which proved to be the winner as Inter slumped to their first defeat of the Serie A season.
Inter had raced to an early lead through a first-half Ivan Perisic penalty, but Lazio equalized with a penalty of their own, and it looked to be there for either side to win it when the Biancocelesti took their chance to go ahead in the match.
The Biancocelesti scored through Felipe Anderson from an incisive counter-attack, but the Inter players had been asking them to put the ball out of play due to the fact that defender Federico Dimarco was on the ground appearing to be hurt.
Inter’s players expressed anger over the incident which proved to be a turning point, appealing to the referee to overturn the goal, while the ensuing scenes led to four yellow cards between the teams.
Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri defended his players though he suggested to Inter captain Samir Handanovic that he had tried to get his players to put the ball out, and in the end Lazio defender Luiz Felipe got himself a post-match red card for his antics and will have to miss the next match after the controversial scenes.
