Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries has been subject to racist chants by a section of Lazio supporters while he was on the pitch during the Nerazzurri’s loss at the Stadio Olimpico yesterday.

This according to Italian news outlet FedeNerauzzurra, who reported video of the chants being aimed at the 25-year-old by some Biancocelesti fans during the game on Twitter.

Racism by fans has been the subject of major controversy in Italian football this season, with incidents being called out by players including Milan’s Mike Maignan and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly among others.

The incidents have been widely condemned, and action has been promised by governing bodies, but the fact the Dumfries was yet another player to be subject to racial abuse from the stands suggests that more work needs to be done and that the problem remains serious.

It remains unclear what action will be taken to punish the fans responsible for the incident and to ensure that further incidents of this nature do not occur.
