Inter defender Stefan de Vrij is glad to have helped his team to an important win against Sheriff Tiraspol, scoring the third goal to put the seal on the Nerazzurri’s first win in the Champions League this season.

Speaking to InterTV after the match, the Dutchman thanked his club and national teammate Denzel Dumfries for a quality assist from which he struck to make it 3-1 and give the team breathing room.

Inter had come into the match against Sheriff under pressure, not only because of the disappointing loss against Lazio on the weekend, but also because they had failed to win their first two matches of the group stage, against Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Nerazzurri took an early lead through Edin Dzeko but were pegged back by a Sebastien Thill free kick early in the second half.

Arturo Vudal found the back of the net to restore their advantage, and then de Vrij made sure of the victory with his well-taken goal from a Dumfries ball into the box.

“A fundamental victory,” is how de Vrij characterized the win, |for us it was like a final and we made clear that we wanted to win. I’m glad we did it.”

Of his goal, he stated that “We have players who are good at putting good deliveries into the box, two goals from set pieces, which was good.”

Of Dumfries he said, “Of course I thank him, already done. It was beautiful and important.”

He closed, “let’s enjoy this victory and then head to Juventus.”
