Inter striker Edin Dzeko is happy to have helped his team get three much-needed points from their Champions League clash with Sheriff Tiraspol at the San Siro.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the match, the Bosnian striker emphasized that the Nerazzurri had gone into the match knowing that they would need to win the match in order to keep their hopes in Europe’s top competition alive.

Dzeko scored the Nerazzurri’s opener, their first goal in the Champions League this season and a vital striker to boost the team’s confidence after the first two matchdays had not gone their way.

A last-minute loss to Real Madrid followed by a goalless draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine had left the Nerazzurri on only one point heading into their match against Sheriff, so only a win would give the team as they look to qualify for the knockout rounds.

“We deserved more in Rome,” he said of the weekend’s Serie A clash with Lazio, |when you lose a match then it is important to give everything in the next one. We did very well from the first minute to the last, it was important to win today.”

“We are still behind in the group,” he went on, “We had to make sure to win, they are on six points, nobody expected it. When they hit on the break they are dangerous, but we did well and three points are the most important thing.”

On hitting an impressive volley in the match against Sheriff after missing straightforward chances against Shakhtar the 35-year-old stated that “Sometimes the most difficult goals come easier, sometimes the opposite. The important thing is to have get the ball into the back of the net.”

Asked whether the Nerazzurri are strong this season than last season he stated, “I didn’t play here then, they were strong from outside, and strong again this year. However, we need to concede fewer goals.”
