Ex Inter player Beppe Bergomi has suggested that Denzel Dumfries is one step away from making the right back position at Inter his, according to a report in the Italian print media today.

Whilst speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport about the Inter vs Juventus match on Sunday evening, Beppe Bergomi explained that whilst Matteo Darmian may play the match, Denzel Dumfries will soon take ownership of the position.

“Darmian could play. Dumfries is missing the last leap in growth, then he is destined to take that position. However, from a Juve perspective, I believe that Darmian can guarantee more balance.”

Beppe Bergomi also discussed who out of Hakan Calhanoglu and Arturo Vidal will take the third midfield spot for the big match.

“If he is well, I expect Calhanoglu. Otherwise, it will be up to Vidal, who brings fundamental physicality and experience to races like this.”

The ex-defender praised Inter’s attacking play this season but suggested that they are poor at winning the ball back and this has hindered the three defenders.

“Inter are beautiful to look at, they attack with quality and ideas, taking many men over the line of the ball. As long as you are in possession it is fine, but when you lose the ball it becomes difficult to recover if you are unable to win it back immediately with high pressure.

“The three defenders are strong, very strong indeed. But compared to the past they are forced to defend more often in the open field and the story becomes more complex.

It would be difficult for anyone to cover so much field perfectly. They have physical strength, right timing in advances and also attention in man-to-man marking.

“However, if they are aimed at speed they do not have the speed and reactivity necessary to cover so much field behind them.”

Juventus are the sort of team that can ruthlessly take advantage of this weakness that Inter have, as Beppe Bergomi points out.

“With FC Sheriff there were several dangerous situations and when Bruno moved on to make the tip in the second half, the defence suffered. A risk that you cannot run against lethal opponents such as Chiesa, Morata or Cuadrado.”

Beppe Bergomi believes that a defeat for either side could have a serious effect on the rest of their season.

“They run upfront and even for a place in the Champions League it will be really tough this year. Losing Sunday could have repercussions, especially mental ones.”
