When Inter host Juventus at the San Siro this evening, CEO Beppe Marotta will come up against an opponent with whom he has a long history.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who highlight the thread of both clubs that runs through Marotta’s career.

Marotta took over at the Bianconeri in 2010, leaving Sampdoria where he had established a strong reputation, and he helped guide the club to an unprecedented nine successive Scudetti.

The executive had hired Antonio Conte who won the Turin club their first three Scudetti, before replacing him with Max Allegri who went on to win five more.

Marotta was not at the club when they parted ways with Allegri and replaced him with Maurizio Sarri in the summer of 2019, by which point he had brought Conte to a second club in the form of the Nerazzurri.

Reportedly the executive had even been keen on Allegri as a replacement for Conte once again, first in August of 2020 when the Italian was reportedly frustrated and considering a departure and then this summer when he did leave and the Nerazzurri were in search of a replacement.

In the end Allegri went back to Juventus after two years away, replacing Andrea Pirlo on the bench, while Inter brought in Simone Inzgahi from Lazio.

However, the intent from Marotta appeared to be clear, and his presence in the stands for this evening’s match will show an intriguing point of connection between the two teams.
