November 11th, 1979 – Following a fourth-place finish in Serie A, one behind Juventus in previous season, Inter Milan got off to a flying start to their 1979-80 league campaign.

Under the management of Eugenio Bersellini, the Nerazzurri didn’t drop points till round thirteen and only lost once in the first half of the season.

As round nine of the campaign came around, Inter were preparing to take on Juventus at San Siro, looking to continue their league dominance and keep the undefeated start going.

After a similar brilliant start to their campaign, Juventus’ season derailed following round eight loss at Stadio Olimpico against Lazio, a stretch where they only managed two wins in the next eight league games.

Despite their first half struggles, the Bianconeri went on a fantastic streak in second half of the season where they went on to challenge Inter for the scudetto till the second last round of the league.

Starting eleven for visitors were Dino Zoff, Antonello Cuccureddu, Claudio Gentile, Giuseppe Fiurino, Sergio Brio, Gaetano Scirea, Franco Causio, Marco Tardelli, Pierino Fanna, Venizio Verza and Domenico Marrocchino.

For the home side, starting eleven were Ivano Bordon, Nazzareno Canuti, Giuseppe Baresi, Giancarlo Pasinato, Roberto Mozzini, Graziano Bini, Domenico Caso, Gabriele Oriali, Alessandro Altobelli, Evaristo Beccalossi and Carlo Muraro.

During the first half, Inter stayed on the front foot for most part. Retained majority of the possession, leaving Juventus to only play counter-attacking football.

Despite retaining possession, the scoring opportunities were hard to come by as Juventus defended well, staying compact in their own half and bursting forward on the wings to counter-attack aggressively.

Bordon had a busy first half defending Nerazzurri goal, as he was faced with plenty of long-distance strikes.

As second half got underway, Altobelli was brought down inside the penalty box, gifting Inter a penalty kick which he converted easily to give the home side a comfortable 1-0 lead.

Couple of minutes later, Inter doubled their advantage when Altobelli struck home a rebound, giving the team a convincing 2-0 lead.

Juventus were completely dominated in every aspect of the match and couldn’t get anything going in their favor. Inter continued dominating possession and also created number of scoring opportunities as a result.

Altobelli completed his hattrick in as the game came to closure, while Carlo Muraro also added a fourth goal for the Nerazzurri.
