Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi believes that the Nerazzurri could have gotten a win over Juventus had they had Romelu Lukaku to play on the counterattack.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the match, the Nerazzurri legend gave the view that his former team had lacked pace and intensity on the counterattack when they needed to kill off the match, leading to their 1-1 draw.

Inter took an early lead through Edin Dzeko, and especially in the second half they looked to sit on what they had as they denied the Bianconeri space and protected their slender advantage.

Juventus quickened the pace and probed for opportunities, while the Nerazzurri looked to hit them on the break when they won the ball back with their opponents out of shape.

The issue for Inter proved to be the lack of pace in a forward line based around Edin Dzeko, an issue not helped by the addition of Alexis Sanchez for Lautaro Martinez, and Bergomi contrasted this to the team’s performances when they could call upon Lukaku.

“Inter did better than Juventus,” he stated, “I don’t remember many shots on goal by the Juventus team. This match ends 3-0 with Lukaku, I am convinced. The only one who accompanied the counter today was Barella and in fact at the end of the game he had cramps.”

“In the centre,” he went on, “the Inter strikers now work in a different way, now the player who is gone is missing. He attacked space. In any case, I saw an Inter in control, if that episode [the late Juventus penalty] didn’t come I didn’t see a real dangerous situation, even if the Nerazzurri had sat back defensively.”
