Ex-Sampdoria Striker Fabio Bazzani: “Inter Would Have Deserved To Win Against Juventus”

Former Sampdoria and Lazio striker Fabio Bazzani believes that Inter had done enough against Juventus to deserve three points in their match on Sunday.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, the 45-year-old gave his assessment of the match and suggested that the Nerazzurri’s performance was good enough to win the match despite having only managed a draw.

Inter had to settle for a point after a late equalizer by the Bianconeri which came via a controversial penalty, but had looked to be close to seeing out the head-to-head clash.

Simone Inzgahi’s men took an early lead through Edin Dzeko when the Bosnian was quickest to react and turned in a Hakan Calhanoglu strike which came off the post, and especially in the second half they prioritized denying the Bianconeri space and protecting their slender advantage.

Bazzani saw enough in the performance to warrant a win even though they shared the points with Juventus.

“The biggest regret is Inter,” he stated, “who were one step away from keeping the pace by winning a head-to-head match. They didn’t succeed, but they would have deserved it.”

Regarding the differences between this season’s Nerazzurri team and last season’s edition he stated that “They are more unpredictable and have more options in attack, but at the same time they concede more, because they have lost some compactness in favour of the attacking phase.”

“Conte’s Inter often accepted that they would defend en masse in their own half and then counter quickly,” he went on. “On the other hand, this Inter always wants to have possession of the ball, and defends and presses higher, it’s in their DNA.”

“Let’s not forget that there is now Dzeko and not Lukaku. Understandably, with him, Simone Inzaghi wants to recover the ball as high up as possible. They are less cynical, in terms of characteristics, up front,” he concluded.
