Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga feels that the penalty awarded to Juventus in their clash with the Nerazzurri on Sunday should not have been given.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, the 61-year-old gave the view that the decision by the VAR to intervene after no penalty had been awarded on the pitch was the wrong one and his former club were hard done by.

Inter were left angry after referee Maurizio Mariani was advised to have a second look at a clumsy challenge by Denzel Dumfries on Juventus left-back Alex Sandro and the official decided to give a spot kick to the Bianconeri for the incident.

The team had been looking to see out the game with a slender advantage and had been keeping Juventus at bay as they probed for an equalizer, but the unexpected VAR intervention meant that they had to settle for sharing the points with the Bianconeri.

“I would not have given the penalty, I say as a former player,” Zenga stated. “It is not true that the referee did not see [the contact by Dumfries on Sandro], he was very well-positioned and judged that that contact was not foul. The problem is the VAR.”
