The refereeing display of Daniele Chiffi during Inter’s 2-0 win over Empoli highlighted the inconsistency of officiating in Italy right now, according to a report in the Italian media today.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter’s last two matches can be used as a case study for the state of officiating in Serie A so far this season.

Inter felt aggrieved when Juventus were given a late penalty against them last Sunday night which caused the game to end 1-1.

Denzel Dumfries was adjudged to have kicked Alex Sandro’s foot in the air. There was contact but it was minimal. After a VAR review, the penalty was awarded.

Against Empoli, a similar clash happened between Danilo D’Ambrosio and Bajrami but the referee did not award a penalty and the VAR official, Paolo Valeri, decided not to get the referee to come and view the incident on the monitor.
