Former referee Luca Marelli has played down the seriousness of Empoli’s potential penalty against Inter on Wednesday night in the Serie A match between the two sides, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking whilst on Radio 24, Luca Marelli explained that there was no need for the challenge between Danilo D’Ambrosio and Nedim Bajrami to be looked at by the VAR.

He feels that the only reason that there is so much uproar about it is that Juventus were awarded a penalty against Inter for a similarly innocuous challenge by Denzel Dumfries on Alex Sandro.

“What happened in Empoli is exactly what happened on Sunday: there is nothing, it is a game contest, it is not needing of VAR. The complaints are the consequence of what happened in Inter-Juve.”

That decision at San Siro stopped Inter from taking all three points against their old rivals. It was one decision in a recent run of poor refereeing decisions in Serie A that are angering fans and coaches.

Inter won the game at Empoli 2-0 thanks to goals from Danilo D’Ambrosio and Federico Dimarco.
