Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag believes that Ajax ultras’ reaction to goalkeeper Andre Onana’s links away amid reports that he is close to a move to Inter next summer just reflect their desire for success.

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster NOS, the Dutch tactician gave the view that if some Ajax supporters are frustrated with Onana it is because they feel he is undermining the club.

Onana’s current deal is set to expire at the end of June 2022 and he is reportedly very close to an agreement with Inter to join next summer on a free transfer as the long-term heir to Samir Handanovic in goal.

Complicating the 25-year-old’s situation is the fact that he is set to be allowed to return from a doping ban that had kept him out of football for the past year this week, though his status at the club is ambiguous.

Ajax ultras group the F-Side released a statement condemning Onana over the situation with his contract running down and links to the Nerazzurri, and ten Hag gave his thoughts on this situation, stating that “The F-Side only want Ajax to succeed” when asked.

When asked about the Dutch champions’ decision to bring in other goalkeepers to reinforce the team he stated that “This is in Ajax’s best interest. We need a good squad. With the loss of Maarten Stekelenburg we found ourselves in a vulnerable position.”
