Inter and Ajax are considering a player exchange that would see goalkeeper Andre Onana join the Nerazzurri in January and Christian Eriksen go the other way.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who report that the possibility could be clarified by medical tests to be carried out on Eriksen in the second half of December.

Eriksen has yet to return to the pitch since the cardiac arrest he suffered in Denmark’s EURO 2020 opener against Finland.

It remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old will be able to play in Serie A again, as Italian regulations strictly prohibit players who use the ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrulator) which he is currently fitted with.

Tests are expected in the second half of December which will determine whether or not the Dane can safely remove the implant.

Should the midfielder not be able to do without the ICD, then he will likely seek a move away to a league where the same regulation does not so that he can make his return to football.

A move back to the Premier League is one possibility, but one of the favourite destinations for the midfielder would be a return to Ajax.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Onana is eligible this week to return to the pitch following a one-year doping ban which has kept him from playing.

However, the Cameroonian’s situation is up in the air due to his contract situation and strong links to Inter.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of June 2022, and the Nerazzurri are reportedly close to securing an agreement with him that would see the keeper arrive next summer on a free transfer as the long-term replacement for Samir Handanovic in goal.

Onana looks almost certain not to find an agreement with the Dutch champions on a contract extension, and he may not be used for the remainder of the season amid condemnation of his actions by Ajax fans.

With both the Nerazzurri and Ajax having players on their hands who may never play for them, depending on the outcome of Eriksen’s medical tests and developments in Onana’s situations, they could seek to make a swap deal as soon as January.

Neither club will want to lose major assets on free transfers, and they could look to find an arrangement that would see the two players change clubs as early as January.
