Legendary former Inter striker Sandro Mazzola does not believe that the result of the derby against AC Milan on Sunday will be decisive for the Serie A season.

Speaking to Italian news outlet DerbyDerbyDerby.it, the former striker gave his thoughts on the upcoming clash with the Rossoneri as well as some other matters related to the Nerazzurri’s season.

Inter go into the first Milan derby of the season seven points behind the Rossoneri, who have only dropped two points in their first eleven Serie A matches of the season.

The Nerazzurri will know that a win can be a big step towards catching their city rivals and Napoli at the top of the table but that a loss could be a big blow to their hopes of defending the Scudetto.

However, even at the end of the match, whatever the result, there will be twenty-six matches remaining in Serie A and much could happen to change the outcome of the season.

“In my opinion, on Sunday the standings will not matter,” Mazzola said. “The derby is a game unto itself. I remember when I played in it in my day: I was only thinking about winning against Milan, because I knew how much the fans cared about it.”

Of coach Simone Inzaghi he said, “I like it very much. I know him personally: he’s a good guy. Prepared and strong in character. He is not making them regret losing Conte.”

Of striker Edin Dzeko he stated, “I like him very much. When he was at Roma I thought he would be perfect for Inter. ”

Of what he would like to see at the team in the January transfer market, he suggested, “For me we need a midfield reinforcement in Januar. Inter could use a Brozovic deputy.”

And on whether the derby will be decisive he stated that “No, it’s too early. In any case, for me the Scudetto eill be contested by Inter, Milan and Napoli.”
