Inter will hope that they can rely on striker Lautaro Martinez to show his best form in the Champions League as they prepare to face Sheriff Tiraspol in the competition.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who highlight the Argentine’s disappointing form in Europe’s top competition since last season and argue that he must prove himself in a massively important group stage campaign.

Martinez has failed to get on the scoresheet in the Champions League so far this season, playing in all three group stages matches but yet to find the back of the net.

Moreover, over his past ten Champions League matches in total, the Argentine has scored only one goal.

This is in stark contrast to his league form, where the striker has been highly prolific under Antonio Conte as the Nerazzurri won the Scudetto and transferred this form to new coach Simone Inzaghi.

Progression from the group stage of the Champions League to the knockout rounds is massively important for Inter, worth €20 million in addition to the prestige attached to it, and the club have failed at the last three times of asking.

The Nerazzurri can take a big step forward towards the knockout rounds of this season’s edition of the competition with a win over Sheriff this evening, but failure to win could leave them in a difficult position once again.

For this reason, they will be relying on Martinez at a massive moment in their season.
