A request for a referendum on the potential demolition of Inter and AC Milan’s San Siro stadium is being discussed by politicians, according to a report in the Italian media today.

As has been reported by Corriere della Sera, Italian politician Ignazio La Russa proposed the referendum whilst talking to Libero.

The idea is now being discussed by the Municipality of Milan in order to unite people who want to protect the historic stadium from being lost entirely.

It would require a thousand signatures on a petition to have the equation formerly posed to the Municipality of Milan.

The idea of a referendum has been criticised by Filippo Barberis of the Democratic Party who said that two years of hard work have gone into the new San Siro project.

“We have worked hard for two years, we have asked for and obtained reductions in volumes. Now it is time for politics to take responsibility.”

It is hoped that the new San Siro will be ready for the two football teams to play in by around 2026.
