Legendary former AC Milan midfielder Demetrio Albertini believes that the Rossoneri will take more of the initiative in tomorrow’s Milan derby while Inter will look to play more on the counterattack.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, the 50-year-old emphasized the danger that the Nerazzurri can pose on the break while he gave the view that it will be his former team who look to have more possession.

Inter have often controlled games so far this season under Simone Inzaghi, but in bigger games they have focused their play on keeping a compact defensive shape and attacking at speed at times.

Milan, as well, can either build attacks with large amounts of the ball or wait patiently and defend while looking for the right opportunities to counter.

The balance of play between these teams will be a key aspect determining how tomorrow’s match goes, but for Albertini it is likely that it will be the Rossoneri who look to dictate the game more and Inter who are more prepared to play on the break.

“I see a Milan that will take the game to them,” he said, “Inter don’t just play long balls though, but have great technical and physical qualities.”

“Pioli’s team has been playing a certain football for two years now,” he went on, “proactive, based on ball possession, always in the opposing half of the pitch. Inter have changed coach and little by little they are taking on the face of an Inzaghi team, who is a particularly detailed and good coach at counterattacks.”
