Former Inter striker Karl-Heinze Rummenigge has expressed his happiness at the team’s performances under Simone Inzaghi so far this season, according to a report in the Italian media today.
Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Bayern Munich executive explained that Inter could have won the Derby della Madonnina last week but is pleased the team still play well despite losing Antonio Conte.
“Unfortunately Inter could have won but that’s okay, the championship is still long. The important thing is not to have lost. It is interesting how even after Conte’s departure from the club, the team play well.”
Talking about the title race as a whole, Karl-Heinze Rummenigge feels that Inter can defend their crown: saying: “Milan and Napoli, which is a surprise, are doing well, but there is time and Inter have the skills to defend their Scudetto despite the important transfers.”
There was clear praise for new Inter boss Simone Inzaghi who Karl-Heinze Rummenigge said has always been a possibility for the job.
“Important players have left, there is no doubt, but an intelligent transfer has been made and the right coach has been caught. Today more than ever the coach counts a lot and Inzaghi is doing a very interesting job, he is very good. I had already guessed it in the past.”
Bayern Munich played Lazio in last season’s Champions League knockout stage and that is why Karl-Heinze Rummenigge was aware of Simone Inzaghi’s talents.
“We have played twice against Lazio in the Champions League: even if Bayern have always won, we have seen Inzaghi’s hand, as in all the years he was in Rome.
“Even at Inter you can see his good work, on the pitch and tactically. It is important that the Milan teams are back as protagonists.”
Expanding further on the importance of the Milan sides having quality, the German said: “Because they are important clubs for Italian and European football. They were missing from the top. Inter won the Scudetto in May, AC Milan are strong.
“Even if I’m still an Interista today, I’m happy to see the Rossoneri at the top. If it’s AC Milan it’s fine, Italian football is fine too.”
