Former Inter President Massimo Moratti has urged the club to swoop for Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne should he become available next summer.

The forward is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to sign an extension, prompted suggestions that Inter could land him on a free.

In an interview published in today’s newspaper edition of Il Mattino, Moratti suggested that Insigne would fit in well at the Stadio San Siro, whilst voicing his disappointment at his form for the Italian national team.

“Insigne would do well in any team, he always offers something different, even if the real pity is that in the national team he never manages to express himself for what he really is worth. There is no need for Inter to make a crazy offer though, his contract is about to expire,” Moratti stated.

Aside from loan spells early in his career, Insigne has spent his entire career with his hometown club but is yet to find an agreement, leading to Moratti to lament the business side of modern football.

“It’s football now (seeing Insigne play for another club). My father didn’t want to change the players he loved the most. When he realised that it had to be done, he preferred to leave Inter, and I understand it.

“There are those who think that after the Treble I should have sold someone, but it would have been madness, a total proof of ungratefulness and also an injustice. Then, as Juventus now demonstrate, rebuilding a team is not a simple thing.

“[Napoli President Aurelio] De Laurentiis is right, football is just like running a business, where caution is always needed. I wish I had understood it too.”

Insigne has scored 114 goals in 411 appearances for Napoli in his career, lifting the Coppa Italia twice with the Partenopei.
