Inter would be at the front of the queue to sign Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne next summer should he fail to extend his contract, according to Italian journalist Paolo Paganini.

In an interview with Tuttomercatoweb.com, Rai Sport journalist Paganini offered his take on the contract impasse between Insigne and Napoli, suggesting Inter were keen on the Italian international.

With his current deal set to run out next summer, 30-year-old Insigne is yet to reach an agreement with the Partenopei and would be free to leave his hometown club at the end of the season.

“There is a game in progress. Insigne is the symbol of Napoli and he also knows that this is the last important contract for him. In Italy perhaps it is Inter that have shown the most interest in him. At the moment I see him moving further away from Napoli,” Paganini declared.

The journalist also suggested that Juventus would be more focused on signing a central midfielder, with links to Borussia Dortmund’s Axel Witsel.

“I don’t think Witsel is suitable to make the department make a leap in quality in midfield. They would need a player with personality like Pirlo, Pjanic or Pogba,” he concluded.

Insigne has spent his entire career at Napoli aside from loan spells early in his career, and has scored 114 goals in 411 appearances in all competitions.
