The Netherlands have confirmed that Inter centre-back Stefan De Vrij will return to Italy for treatment after sustaining an injury on international duty.

In a tweet from their official account, the Dutch football association (KNVB) announced that De Vrij had picked up an injury during their 2-2 draw against Montenegro in 2022 World Cup Qualifying on Sunday, and would not be available for a clash against Norway on Tuesday.

De Vrij limped off in the final minutes of the game in Podgorica and has now officially been sent back to Milan to work with Inter’s medical staff, as his compatriots take on the Norwegians in their ultimate match of the qualification phase.

The former Lazio defender is expected in Italy today and will undergo tests as Inter determine the extent of the damage, on the same day that Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko returned to the club following his own injury.

“Stefan De Vrij has left the training camp because he suffered an injury last night in the game against Montenegro. As a result, he will miss Tuesday’s game against Norway. Get well soon, Stefan!” the KNVB tweeted.
