Inter defender Stefan de Vrij has avoided suffering a serious sprain after coming off against Montenegro with the Dutch national team, but he will still miss the Nerazzurri’s first two matches back from the international break.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the Dutchman will be forced to sit out the clashes with Napoli in Serie A and Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

De Vrij had to come off as a substitute in the closing minutes of the Netherlands’ World Cup qualifier against Montenegro, though the extent of his injury was not immediately known.

Tests have revealed that the 29-year-old has suffered a strain in the adductors of his right thigh, and that this problem should not keep him out for many weeks.

De Vrij could return against Venezia on November 27 or against Spezia on December 1, but he is not expected to be fit in time for the Nerazzurri’s vital matches against Napoli and Shakhtar.

Meanwhile, the prognosis is better for the likes of Alessandro Bastoni and Edin Dzeko who should both be back in time for the Partenopei clash.
