Former AC Milan and Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo believes that Inter are very much in the race for the Scudetto despite the fast start of the two teams ahead of them in the table.

Speaking to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, the former Rossoneri captain gave his assessment of the title race in Serie A which he sees as being between the top three teams.

Inter will not have wanted to find themselves seven points behind the two leaders in the table after the first twelve matches of their first Scudetto defense in eleven seasons.

However, the performances that they have produced will give the Nerazzurri confidence that they can overhaul the gap on the two sides at the top, especially given that they were somewhat unlucky not to take three points from the derby against AC Milan and have the chance to reduce the deficit with Napoli this weekend.

“I was expecting Milan to be in front,” Montolivo stated, “between the top three. However, I did not expect Milan and Napoli to start this quickly.”

“Inter are doing well,” he went on, “but there are two teams who are doing even better than the Nerazzurri. It will be a three horse race until the end.”

The former midfielder added that “Milan have not changed much compared to the other teams, they have the same coach, they have very solid foundations. This season they are more ready than ever to win the Scudetto.”
