Referee Paolo Valeri has come in for some criticism from Italian media for his display in charge of Inter’s 3-2 win over Napoli at the Giuseppe Meazza yesterday evening.

Several errors made by the official during the Serie A clash were highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who suggest that he could have been more precise in his judgments during the match.

Valeri mostly let the action flow during the massive head-to-head between the first- and third-placed teams in the Serie A table, but in some cases did appear to miss decisions.

In the case of a collision between Inter striker Edin Dzeko and Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina, for example, no foul was awarded, while the Corriere suggests that it would have been worth giving the foul against Ospina for the contact.

Meanwhile, the newspaper also highlights the discrepancy in the added time at the end of the match, in which eight minutes were awarded despite a full ten having passed by without the ball in play between injuries and other stoppages during the half.

The Corriere also noted that in the case of the Nerazzurri’s penalty Valeri had to rely on the VAR to spot the handball by Kalidou Koulibaly in the area, while Inter’s second goal was only given after the Goal-Line Technology assisted Valeri after the ball clearly crossed the line.
