Inter striker Edin Dzeko was fortunate to avoid a second yellow late on in Inter’s 3-2 win over Napoli yesterday evening, according to Italian media.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport argued that the Bosnian should have been shown the booking and duly sent off by referee Paolo Valeri for a handball in the dying minutes of the encounter.
Dzeko had already picked up one booking during stoppage time of the match, for deliberately kicking the ball away following a foul to stop the Partenopei from quickly restarting play.
A few minutes afterwards, the 35-year-old did appear to handle the ball, and it looked to be a situation where a yellow card could have certainly been awarded.
However, Valeri was not interested in giving a second yellow to the player and he remained on the pitch, but for the Gazzetta this was not the correct decision on Valeri’s part.
