Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi believes that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi’s substitutions during the second half of yesterday’s 3-2 win over Napoli did not help the team.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Bergomi gave the view that the changes during the second half of the match led to the Nerazzurri losing some control and allowing the Partenopei to push for an equalizer, and also singled out Nicolo Barella and Ivan Perisic as players who should have stayed on the pitch.

Inter came back from a 1-0 deficit to lead 3-1 during the second half of yesterday’s crucial head-to-head clash, and for a period they looked to be comfortably seeing out the win.

However, after Joaquin Correa had to come off with an injury, the likes of Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Ivan Perisic also came off.

During the final twenty or so minutes the Nerazzurri looked to be hanging on as their opponents quickened the tempo and pressed for an equalizer, and in Bergomi’s view the changes were a significant culprit for this shift in the dynamic.

“It’s true that this is the first head-to-head match they’ve won,” he stated, “but in my opinion this has always been the level they’ve shown in these matches. The match lasts ninety minutes, and in my opinion Inter always find themselves in a bit of trouble towards the end, it happened again today.”

He went on that “Perisic and Darmian play very high, they always have 5-6 players in attack. The substitutions were perhaps not dealt with optimally today, at 3-1 I think Inzaghi has partly already started to think about the match on Wednesday.”

“But there are some players that this Inter cannot lose,” he concluded, “Barella and Perisic are two players that I would never take off. However, Inter had a great match today.”
