Milan Mayor Beppe Sala feels that it is not his role to further any debate about Inter and AC Milan’s plans to demolish the San Siro as part of a proposed new stadium construction.

Speaking to the press, as reported by FCInterNews, Sala gave his thoughts on the issue of the proposed demolition which he feels his a settled matter unless the clubs can be convinced to take a different course of action.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri are hoping to press forward with their plans to build a new stadium in Milan after having secured the approval from the city council and the Mayor following last month’s civic elections.

The clubs are committed to building an entirely new stadium given that they feel that it is the only way to adequately improve their infrastructure and to increase revenues sufficiently.

However, they have met with resistance on the question of demolishing the existing San Siro in particular, with some groups including the “Yes to Preserve Meazza” movement aiming to stop the demolition of the stadium through a referendum.

Sala gave the view that “I am not in a position to participate in a debate that still calls into question the construction of the new stadium at San Siro.”

He went on that he is “willing to discuss how it is done, and therefore for example the urbanization process takes place, but not on the question of yes or no to the new stadium.”

He went on of opponents of the San Siro’s demolition that “If they want to hold a referendum it is in the scope of the councillors, but the fact remains that we are speaking without a key third party, that is the teams.”

“It is useless for us to keep trying to talk to each other,” he reiterated. “There are many forms the question can take, the problem is that if it is ‘yes or no’ then I can only watch on.”

“I’ve been trying for two years,” he concluded, “and basically I wasn’t able to convince the teams to work on the San Siro, but this is the reality. So let’s see what happens.”
