Legendary former Inter defender Lucio believes that the Nerazzurri won the treble when he was with the club thanks to the cohesion within the squad.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, the treble winner also gave the view that the current Nerazzurri squad under Simone Inzaghi looks to have similar qualities.

Inter managed one of the great moments in the club’s history a little over a decade ago when they won the Champions League to cap off a campaign in which they had already won the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia.

The squad during that period was undeniably full of quality, and was led by a charismatic manager in the form of current Roma boss Jose Mourinho.

This time around, the Nerazzurri are under the guidance of former Lazio head coach Simone Inzaghi, and according to Lucio, a similar kind of squad cohesion is emerging.

“Our Champions League win was an incredible ride, we achieved that feat because we were a unique group forged by a great coach,” he stated.

“This Inter is following our example,” he went on, “you can see that the players really love each other. Simone Inzaghi is doing well and managing to build a real group that shows a lot of desire to play the right kind of football.”

He added that “Even though they score a lot of goals, this team also has an exceptional defense, which is always a decisive factor in big European matches.”
